[ gunfire ] a hail of bullets rang out as the last suspect, 19-year-old dzhokhar tsarnaev held off police in a watertown, massachusetts neighborhood in a backyard last night. we learned from university of massachusetts dartmouth officials, he was on campus every day until thursday, attending classes, parties in dorms during that period. now he is in custody in a boston hospital under heavy guard. we are also remembering four people who were killed, three at the marathon monday and the m.i.t. officer killed during a shootout with the two suspects. with the hunt over for the suspects, we are focusing on the full puzzle on cnn. how is it two brothers described by many as normal are suspected of horrific terrorist bombings. want to head to cnn's susan candiotti at the center of it all in watertown, massachusetts. so what has the watertown police chief been saying about the investigation and last night's take down, susan? >> reporter: hi, don. we are getting more details from the chief about what happened and just to show you that things are still happening out here, we can show you still have
right now in this investigation. we have learned a short time ago that the suspect, dzhokhar tsarnaev, now will not face criminal charges until tomorrow. even though massachusetts doesn't have the death penalty, he should face the death penalty under federal law. >> this is just kind of case that it should be applied to. in fact, the only other time it has been used since '94 is on timothy mcbay. given the facts i have seen, it would be appropriate to use the death penalty in this case and i would hope they would apply it in federal court. >> reporter: there is growing evidence today that his brother, tamerlan tsarnaev had become incredibly radical. this video of a radical jihadist was posted and then removed from his personal youtube channel. he created it in august shortly after an extended visit to russia. there are increasing questions about how the fbi handled its investigation of tamerlan tsarnaev. they did not follow up after that trip to russia last year. the very latest on the investigation from our crime and justice correspondent, mr. joe johns. joe joins us from washington.
expect, the younger brother, 19-year-old dzhokhar tsarnaev. he's still being hospitalized. he's listed in steer eerious bu stable condition. an official says he has injuries to his throat and is unable to talk. he could be charged by federal prosecutors today right at his hospital bedside. wolf? >> that would be a pretty dramatic moment if in fact a judge or magistrate shows up at the beth israel deaconess medical center, goes to the bedside of this 19-year-old suspect and formally noichz him of what's going on as far as federal charges are concerned. >> it would indeed. >>> let's take a look at what else we know about the process, the justice department coming up with some formal charges. our crime and justice correspondent joe johns is monitoring this part of the story in washington for us. what are officials telling you, joe, what can we anticipate? >> well, first, on that point were you just making, the rules say that when a person's charged with a federal crime, they need to be informed as soon as practicable but it is not clear whether that would mean this suspect would have to b

. in the tense final standoff, dzhokhar tsarnaev was hidden in a bo a boat parked in the watertown driveway of a resident covered by a tarp. a helicopter overhead was able to take what they call thermal images showing the movements inside that boat. joining us now is tom foreman, national security analyst, tom fuentes as well, assistant former director of the fbi. these thermal images, walk us through, tom, what was going on. >> we were just talking about this a moment ago, wolf, astonishing this is the boat here, so you have a sense what we are talking about, nearby house, fence on this side. tom, you were saying in this picture, you can't see much in terms of anybody inside the boat, this picture is still very valuable. why? >> it is going to help you position your tactical people, your observers, sniper observers, bomb techs and any other things. this is being shot in video. we are only seeing the still picture. so, this is getting collected through the -- excuse me, a forward-looking infrared image willing system of the helicopter that system is then being beamed down to a tactical comm
interview more about tamerlan and dzhokhar tsarnaev. shannon is driving us from washington. what did the uncle have to say today? >> wolf, his name is ruslan tsarni. today the uncle is speaking a different tune. i started the interview asking what's your reaction to the capture of your younger nephew. take a listen. >> i'm relieved. i'm relieved that he's alive and now there's a chance to find out who was behind it. who is the mentor and how possibly he could get involved and do this harm to innocent people. second of all, i stress that there's a chance for dzhokhar to speak forgiveness. >> when the older brother was a young child, the uncle actually had him in his care for a while and i asked the uncle about how he interacted and kept up with the older son for over the years. the uncle said in 2009 he had a conversation with the older brother, the older boy, and that he noticed a change in his voice where he was becoming more extreme in terms of his religious views. i asked him what he attributed that to. take a listen at how he described that. >> i called one of the gentleman livin

, this at a residence that is believed to have been affiliated with the suspect, 19-year-old dzhokhar tsarnaev, in the past, the fbi took three people, two males and a female, into custody for questioning friday evening, according to new bedford police. the residence searched by the private off-campus housing of three students. there have been questions throughout the day, i talked to chris lawrence about this, whether or not the suspect, dzhokhar, was actually living on the umass dartmouth campus or whether he was at this residence that was being searched throughout the day in cambridge. it doesn't seem like we really know one way or the other. >> we should be careful in the sense they have been taken in for questioning. they're going to retrace every step as they look through every e-mail, cell phone conversation, every place he's lived in recent years, friends, family members, they will question everybody. now we wait to see from the fbi, new bedford police saying they were taken in for questioning by the fbi. we'll see whether they are persons of interest or they are just trying to get inf
'll mispronounce his name. dzhokhar tsarnaev. how do you know him, tell us anything you know about him. >> i went to high school with dzhokhar. i knew him as dzhokhar. he graduated below me. he was good friends, worked at harvard university as a lifeguard. yeah, we partied, good high school friends, and a bunch -- all of my high school -- everybody, we're all like in shock. there is no telltale signs of any kind of malicious behavior from dzhokhar. it's coming as a shock really. >> what town did he live in? can you tell us about his family? anything you may know about his life. >> well, we -- i live on columbia street which is just a street over from norfolk street, so, i mean, he lived literally maybe a block away from me. i mean, as far as i know, i didn't know his close personal family, but i mean, i knew dzhokhar, and he didn't show any malicious sign, no evidence that would lead any of to us really believe he would be capable of something like this. >> did you know his older brother. one that was killed in a fire fight with police officers? >> i did not know his older brother. i didn't even
